Jeff and I went to Dallas this weekend. We flew down on Friday, with a little bit of sitting around in airports mixed in.
I realized on the trip that Jeff and I don't travel well together. Jeff would probably be surprised to hear that. The thing is, when Jeff travels, he travels in solo mode, for the most part. Which means he sits and thinks and watches people and walks around and reads and jots little notes of the interesting things he is thinking. Notice I didn't say, "He talks for hours and hours with his lovely wife."
I've discovered that one of the things that makes me feel unloved is for Jeff not to talk to me. Not that he's "not talking to me" intentionally, like I sometimes do when I'm mad. He just happens to be not talking.
This weekend, I got really annoyed with him for reading his book. So I decided to ignore him. Then he decided to go for a walk. Which meant he left me with all of our luggage. So not only did he not even notice that I was ignoring him, but also he wasn't even there for me to ignore and I had to pee, but I was stuck with all the luggage. So then I was even madder.
And did the sight of his inexplicably annoyed wife make him want to go talk to her?
No.
But he did anyway, and then things were all better.
Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.
