What's so crazy about Rome is that it's this modern city with a bunch of really old stuff mixed in. And I mean really old. I remember when I moved to Philadelphia from Dallas, I was enchanted with how much history there was everywhere. Well Philly ain't got nuthin' on Rome!
Another thing about Rome is that they are still discovering things. They are still excavating. But it's not this precious little archeological site. It's a city. Where people still live and work and drive cars and ride the subway. And you just walk around and suddenly you see 2,000-year-old pillars just standing around.
And American dudes drinking water.
And really intricate carvings in the side of a... something. I don't remember.
And then there's this fantastic building. With these trees that just look awesome.
The building is called Palazzo Venezia. You can read about it here. (You'll need to scroll down a bit. Also, the picture at the top of the page shows the fountain I was standing in front of in this post.)
Oh, look, another beautiful tree. Wait. What is THAT?
It's a Roman soldier! Waiting to have a picture taken with you for a small fee.
No thanks. I'll just stand over here and take a picture for free.
