Jeff and I are not active people. Some people really enjoy being active and sweating and they are good at sports and stuff. Those people aren't us.
But we've both been blessed with some pretty good genes and have managed to stay fairly slim without really working at it. But we both know that we'd be healthier if we were more active and our metabolisms are slowing down a little anyway. We're starting to feel our ages.
So, we decided to try out Couch to 5K. It's a running program that gets you from not being active at all to running 5K in 2 months. Tonight, we finished week one, which is pretty simple. You do a 5-minute warm-up walk, and then you alternate running for 60 seconds and walking for 90 seconds for a total of 20 minutes. It's really not too bad, although the heat we've been having has made it a little tougher.
The only problem I've run into so far is that we haven't been stretching any before or after and I'm starting to feel it. My hamstrings are starting to feel a little hamstrung.
Yes, stretching is a good idea. I find that it's more important to stretch after than it is to stretch before. Just make sure you start each run with a minimum of 1 minute of walking and you should be set!
